The short answer is: AI has not deciphered Etruscan, and there is no accepted breakthrough. What AI has done is make some useful contributions around pattern recognition, inscription reconstruction, and hypothesis generation. The jump from that to actually reading Etruscan remains enormous.
Etruscan occupies an awkward middle ground. Unlike Linear A, it is not completely opaque. We can read the alphabet, pronounce words approximately, identify many names, numbers, kinship terms, religious formulas, and some grammatical endings. But much of the vocabulary and many subtleties of the language remain uncertain. Scholars can often tell what kind of text they are looking at without being able to translate every sentence.

Etruscan has only partial anchors and a limited surviving corpus. AI can discover statistical regularities, but statistics alone do not tell you whether a word means "king," "river," or "sacrifice."
In fact, some scholars have recently pushed back against the popular narrative that AI is on the verge of solving these languages. The argument is that AI can find patterns that humans miss, but without external evidence there is no reliable way to verify that those patterns correspond to actual meanings rather than coincidences.
My sense is that AI will probably help Etruscan in the same way microscopes helped biology. It will let scholars see things that were previously invisible: subtle grammatical patterns, relationships among inscriptions, regional dialect differences, and damaged text restorations. But the romantic image of an AI suddenly announcing, "Here is the complete translation of Etruscan," seems unlikely.
The irony is that Etruscan may be one of the hardest possible tests for AI. Modern language models learn meaning by being exposed to immense amounts of text connected to the world. Etruscan survives in a relatively tiny corpus, mostly tomb inscriptions, dedications, and short texts. It's rather like trying to reconstruct English from a few thousand gravestones and memorial plaques.
So where do we stand? A few yards farther up the hill than five years ago, but nowhere near the summit. The claims are running ahead of the evidence. AI is becoming a very powerful assistant to Etruscan scholars; it has not become an Etruscan scholar itself.
Yes, and I think what you've been told is basically right, with an important qualification: the evidence is stronger for pre-Roman/early Roman communities and Etruscan activity in the Rome–Tiber region than for an Etruscan settlement sitting where Rome itself later stood.
The really interesting piece is Veii. It was an Etruscan city only about 15 km northwest of Rome, and archaeology shows it becoming a substantial settlement as early as the ninth century BCE—well before the traditional 753 BCE date. More recent excavations in the northwestern outskirts of modern Rome have actually found Veian/Etruscan houses and a Veian-type cemetery, interpreted as evidence for an Etruscan community living surprisingly close to Rome. The researchers describe this as "internal colonisation" of the territory near the Roman-Etruscan frontier.
And there is an especially nice linguistic clue. Etruscan inscriptions from Veii and Cerveteri contain forms related to Latino/Latin, while an Etruscan inscription from about 530–520 BCE appears to use latiqe for someone associated with Latium. So Etruscans were not merely living in an isolated Etruscan linguistic world north of the Tiber; they clearly knew and referred to the peoples and territory around Latium.
But I would be cautious about the phrase "Etruscan place references to communities at or near Rome dating well before the founding." If what you were told was that inscriptions themselves establish named communities at the site of Rome before 753, I'd want to see the particular inscriptions. The surviving Etruscan epigraphic record is actually rather poor at Veii, and the earliest Etruscan alphabetic evidence is generally eighth century.
The archaeology, however, is much less ambiguous about the broader point: there wasn't a nice empty piece of land called Rome waiting for Romulus to plant a flag in 753 BCE. There were settlements on the hills, communities in the surrounding territory, trade along the Tiber, and a very active Etruscan power immediately to the northwest. The conventional "founding of Rome" is therefore almost certainly a process compressed by later Romans into a date and a story.
And this is where your earlier skepticism about myths becomes useful. We don't need to rescue Romulus and say, "Well, there must have been a real Romulus underneath the legend." The archaeological evidence doesn't require that at all. A traditional foundation story can be entirely legendary while preserving the fact that something important happened in roughly that period.
In fact, I think the more interesting question is not "Was Romulus real?" but "Why did later Romans feel the need to turn a messy process of urban aggregation into a single foundation event?"
That question may tell us considerably more about Roman political memory than about eighth-century Rome.

A community doesn't ordinarily experience its own history as "Today we are founded." People live somewhere, move around, merge with neighbors, build walls, abandon settlements, marry into other communities, fight, trade, and gradually become something different. Later generations want a beginning, and eventually somebody asks, "When did Rome begin?" 753 BCE is a wonderfully convenient answer.
And once you have a date, the story almost inevitably acquires a founder. A foundation date without a founder is rather unsatisfying mythology.
The same compression happens constantly in history. We turn a long transition into an event because events are much easier to remember and narrate than processes. "The Roman Republic was founded in 509 BCE" is useful shorthand even though nobody woke up one morning and discovered that the Republic had been installed overnight.
So I agree: no special Roman psychological mechanism is required. It's just what historical memory does.
And that makes the pre-753 Etruscan evidence more interesting, not less. It doesn't necessarily contradict the Roman founding story. It simply tells us that "Rome was founded in 753" and "there were communities and activity at Rome before 753" are perfectly compatible statements once "founded" is understood as the later conventional beginning of a historical entity rather than the moment a place first existed.

The striking thing isn't really that Etruscan is non-Indo-European; it's that Indo-European languages came to dominate almost the whole peninsula, while a handful of linguistic islands survived. Etruscan was one of those survivors.
And "historical accident" is probably doing a lot of work there. Language replacement doesn't require extermination or even mass migration. A population can adopt the language of a politically, economically, or demographically dominant neighbor over generations. Geography, trade routes, political organization, prestige, intermarriage, and sheer luck can determine which communities retain their old language.
What's especially interesting is that Etruscan wasn't necessarily the only pre-Indo-European language in Italy. We know so little about the languages that disappeared that the apparent map of "Indo-European Italy plus Etruscan" is probably misleading. The archaeological population landscape was considerably more complicated than the surviving languages suggest.
And the chronology matters. The Indo-Europeanization of Italy wasn't one event. The Italic languages themselves diversified into Latin, Oscan, Umbrian and others, and there were multiple movements and interactions over a very long period. By the historical period, Indo-European had won the linguistic contest almost everywhere—but we are looking at the winners' map, because the losers mostly left no literature behind.
That makes Etruscan rather precious. It isn't merely an eccentric language sitting beside Latin. It may be one of the very few surviving pieces of a much older linguistic landscape that has otherwise almost completely vanished.
And I think your formulation also puts the Etruscan-origin question in the right perspective. Instead of asking "Why did these strange people come to Italy?", perhaps the default question ought to be "Why did this particular language survive here when most of its neighbors disappeared?" That's a rather different historical problem.
