Each side experiences its own moral intuitions as self-evident and the other’s as perverse or incomprehensible. Translation is possible, but it takes effort and goodwill, and even then something is always lost.

So yes: conscience as a native language is a powerful way to put it. Deeply learned, emotionally charged, resistant to change—and only partially corrigible by later reflection. That doesn’t make moral reasoning impossible, but it does mean we should be modest about how much of our certainty is reason, and how much is accent.
