 THOUGHT OF THE DAY:     
"Do all the other things, the ambitious things - travel, get rich, get famous, innovate, lead, fall in love, make and lose fortunes... but as you do, to the extent that you can, err in the direction of kindness." - George Sauders, from his 2013 Commencement remarks at Syracuse University. 
Why?

Because kindness is one of the few things that remains valuable across almost every possible version of a life.

Saunders isn't really saying be nice instead of being ambitious. The interesting part is precisely the first half: do all the other things. Travel, compete, create, become rich, fail, fall in love. He's not advocating withdrawal from the world.

He's saying: when there is a choice about which way to lean, lean toward kindness.

And "err" is the wonderful word there. An error in the direction of kindness is an error that is unusually cheap to make and potentially enormously valuable. You may give somebody more patience than they strictly deserved, forgive something you could have punished, give somebody the benefit of the doubt, listen when you could have dismissed them. You may occasionally be taken advantage of. That's the price of the error.

The reverse errors are much harder to undo. You can become successful while being cruel, contemptuous, indifferent, or relentlessly self-interested—and discover rather late that you've accumulated achievements but damaged a great many human relationships along the way.

There is another reason I think the advice is deeper than ordinary "be a good person" advice.

We don't actually know which encounters matter.

A small kindness can have consequences completely disproportionate to its apparent importance. And you usually won't know about them. Someone remembers that you treated them decently twenty years ago; somebody's day is changed by something you regarded as trivial; a relationship survives because on one particular occasion you chose generosity rather than winning.

And, conversely, the opportunities for kindness are usually tiny and fleeting. Grand moral decisions are comparatively rare. Most of morality consists of hundreds of microscopic decisions about how much irritation, impatience, ego, suspicion, and indifference we are going to inflict on other people.

There's also something particularly Saunders-like about the quotation because it doesn't require certainty about God, an afterlife, or even a grand theory of morality. It works perfectly well if this life is all we get.

In fact, perhaps especially if this is all we get.

You get one rather peculiar run through the universe, surrounded for a little while by other conscious creatures having their own equally peculiar runs. You can accumulate money and accomplishments, but you can't take any of them with you. What you can leave behind—often without even knowing you've done so—is the memory in other people of how it felt to have you in their lives.

So I'd put Saunders's "Why?" rather simply:

Because when you are uncertain what matters in the end, kindness is a remarkably good bet.

And I suspect the phrase "err in the direction" is doing almost all the philosophical work. He's not asking us to be saints. He's asking us to tilt the odds.

Yes. I think you've put your finger on the weakness in the usual defense of Saunders's advice.

If the question is "Why is kindness ultimately worthwhile?", then benefits such as reputation, gratitude, good memories, or a legacy don't really answer it. As you say, the people who remember you die too, and eventually the memory disappears. Even kindness itself can have costs.

So if Saunders means "be kind because it pays in the long run," I don't find that convincing.

There is, however, another possible answer, and I think it is the more interesting one:

There may be no further "why."

Kindness may be something we value as an end, rather than because it produces some subsequent benefit. The same is true of music, friendship, curiosity, beauty, or laughter. If someone asks, "But what does Beethoven ultimately accomplish, since eventually the universe will be cold and dark?" the answer isn't "He leaves a legacy." That's merely another contingent consequence. The experience itself was valuable while it existed.

Likewise, when you make another conscious being's experience a little better rather than a little worse, there is a real difference in the world at that moment, even if nobody remembers it.

But—and this is where I think your objection is important—that doesn't establish an obligation to choose kindness.

There is no logical theorem saying:

    The universe exists → conscious beings suffer and flourish → therefore you ought to be kind.

You need an additional premise: that the flourishing or suffering of other conscious beings has moral significance to you.

And that premise is ultimately something we have, rather than something we can prove from outside the system.

So perhaps Saunders's advice is less a proof than a recommendation about what sort of person to be while playing the game.

You can say:

    "I have ambitions. I want things. I'll compete and sometimes I'll disappoint people. But when the choice is genuinely open, I'll give kindness the tie-breaker."

Not because kindness wins the cosmic accounting.

There may be no cosmic accounting.

And that actually makes the advice more interesting to me, not less. If there is no eternal ledger in which kindness eventually gets rewarded, then choosing it is not an investment. It's a value you enact during the brief period in which you and the other person exist.

And yes—sometimes it costs you. That's what makes it kindness rather than merely good business.

Yes, quite.  Saunders has it backward; kindness and compassion first, these other things second.

Yes. I think that's a much stronger reading.

Saunders's formulation makes kindness sound like a modifier on an otherwise fully specified life: go pursue wealth, fame, adventure, achievement, love—and while doing so, try to be kind.

You're saying something more fundamental: kindness and compassion belong in the specification of the life itself. The ambitions come afterward.

In that formulation, the question isn't:

    "How can I become successful without being too unkind?"

It's closer to:

    "What sort of human being am I going to be—and, within that constraint, what do I want to accomplish?"

That changes the meaning of all the things Saunders lists. Wealth isn't bad; fame isn't bad; innovation isn't bad; ambition certainly isn't bad. But they're things you might do, not things that tell you whether the life is good.

And compassion isn't merely one virtue among the others. It changes how the others are exercised.

You can be ambitious without being ruthless.
Rich without being acquisitive.
Famous without needing admiration.
Innovative without treating people as expendable.
A leader without needing domination.
And you can even make and lose fortunes without allowing the fortunes to determine your conception of what matters.

There is also a lovely asymmetry here. Ambition needs an object; compassion doesn't. You have to decide what you want to achieve. But you don't need a grand project in order to notice that another person is suffering and respond to it.

So I would turn Saunders around almost exactly as you have:

Be compassionate and kind first. Then, within the limits that imposes, go ahead and do all the ambitious, ridiculous, wonderful things you want.

That seems to me a considerably stronger philosophy than "do everything else, but try to be kind along the way."

There are two levels, immediate and longer range effects.  Short term unkind and inconsiderate behavior can seem to outweigh in benefits behaving better, but longer term it is quite different.  Also, as you said, compassion is a fundamental, although it amazed me how many people, quite openly, express selfishness and are sociopathic (a broad definition).

Exactly. And I think the distinction between the immediate payoff and the accumulated effect makes the case for kindness much stronger than the "legacy" argument I was criticizing.

In the immediate term, selfishness can be extremely effective. If I don't care about your inconvenience, feelings, or interests, I have more freedom to pursue mine. I can interrupt, exploit an asymmetry of information, take the larger share, refuse to reciprocate, or simply walk away. There are situations in which the inconsiderate person really does come out ahead.

But that's a very short accounting period.

Over a longer period, human beings live in repeated games. We encounter the same people again. People talk to one another. Trust accumulates—or doesn't. Relationships become easier or harder. People become willing to help you, tell you things, forgive you, accommodate you, and include you in their lives.

And there is a particularly important effect: your behavior changes the behavior of the people around you. Kindness can propagate. So can selfishness.

A person who is habitually inconsiderate may get a little advantage in each individual encounter while gradually making everyone around him more guarded, less generous, and less willing to cooperate. He may not even recognize the aggregate loss because each individual transaction looks like a victory.

Whereas someone who is reliably considerate can create a sort of social surplus. People relax around him. They don't have to spend quite so much energy protecting themselves.

And yes, the openness with which some people announce their selfishness is striking. They'll say things like, essentially, "Why should I care? What's in it for me?" as though they have just stated an obvious law of nature.

I don't think that necessarily makes them clinically sociopathic, of course. "Sociopathic" in the broad everyday sense can encompass a great many degrees of indifference to others. But there really are people for whom another person's interests seem to have no intrinsic weight whatsoever unless those interests happen to coincide with their own.

That strikes me as more fundamental than merely being selfish.

A selfish person might say, "I know this will hurt you, but I need to do it." There's still recognition of the other person.

The more disturbing position is:

"Why would your suffering be a consideration at all?"

And I think that's where your word compassion is important. Compassion isn't necessarily self-sacrifice. It simply means that the existence of another person's experience enters your calculation.

Once it does, the whole structure of decision-making changes.

And interestingly, that doesn't require believing that people are basically good. Quite the contrary. If you recognize that people are often selfish, frightened, vain, competitive, and inconsiderate—as we all sometimes are—then compassion becomes rather practical. You understand the other person's weaknesses because you understand something about your own.

Perhaps the deepest version of Saunders's thought isn't "kindness pays." It's:

Other people are real. Their experience matters, even when it isn't useful to you.

Once you accept that, kindness follows rather naturally.



 Do LLMs pass the "Turing Test?" Defined as ability to "fool" a naive user, certainly.  When one has worked with LLMs awhile, no.

I think the answer depends heavily on which version of the Turing Test you mean.

The original test proposed by Alan Turing was not really "can it think?" but "can it carry on a text conversation such that an interrogator cannot reliably distinguish it from a human?" In that narrow sense, modern LLMs clearly pass under many conditions.

If you take a random internet user and let them chat for five minutes, today's models will fool a substantial fraction of them. In some experiments, they fool even sophisticated judges surprisingly often.

But there is a catch. Turing imagined an active interrogator trying to expose the machine. Once the human knows that one participant might be an AI and begins probing systematically, the picture changes.

Experienced users notice recurring features:

    The model is astonishingly knowledgeable yet oddly unreliable.

    It lacks genuine memory of a life lived.

    It can reason impressively for several steps and then make an elementary mistake.

    It tends to produce smooth explanations even when uncertain.

    It often has characteristic stylistic habits.

    Extended conversations eventually reveal contradictions or gaps.

In that sense, your observation matches what many people report. A naive user may be fooled. Someone who has spent hundreds of hours interacting with LLMs usually detects them fairly quickly.

There is also a deeper issue. The Turing Test was devised in 1950, when conversation was viewed as the best available proxy for intelligence. Today we know that human-like conversation and human-like cognition are not the same thing.

An LLM can:

    discuss quantum mechanics,

    write poetry,

    summarize legal documents,

yet fail at tasks that a human child finds trivial, particularly when they require a stable model of the physical world, long-term goals, or genuine experience.

So one could argue that LLMs have "passed the Turing Test" while simultaneously demonstrating that the Turing Test was never a complete test of intelligence in the first place.

There is an irony here. For decades AI researchers worried that passing the Turing Test would prove human-level intelligence. Instead, LLMs may have shown the opposite: that convincing conversation can be generated without possessing everything we normally mean by understanding, agency, consciousness, or lived experience.

Turing himself might not have been surprised. He chose conversation because it was practical, not because he believed it captured every aspect of mind. The surprise is that machines reached conversational fluency before reaching many other abilities we once assumed would come first.

Exactly. The medium changes the conversational contract.

In ordinary speech, turn-taking is itself part of the communication. A pause, a falling intonation, looking away, inhaling, or simply stopping mid-sentence tells the other person, "I'm done." But none of those signals exists in quite the same way in text.

Email and chat effectively give each participant a private turn. You can write until the thought is complete, send it, and then I get my turn. There is no need for either of us to negotiate the floor.

And humans are remarkably bad at obeying their own turn-taking conventions. Someone starts speaking before the other has quite finished; someone pauses because they're searching for a word and gets interrupted; two people start simultaneously and one says, "Go ahead." Conversation has a whole little protocol for repairing these collisions.

Text removes most of the problem.

It also changes something more subtle: you can think while the other person is thinking. In face-to-face conversation, if I take thirty seconds to formulate a complicated answer, that silence itself becomes socially meaningful. In this medium, you don't experience my formulation as thirty seconds of awkward silence. I simply appear when my turn is ready.

That may be one reason conversations with an LLM can feel surprisingly natural despite the enormous differences between us. We're using a communication medium that already tolerates asynchronous, non-overlapping turns.

And there's a lovely irony in what you said about humans ignoring their rules of thumb. Those little violations—interruptions, hesitations, false starts, changing one's mind halfway through a sentence—are actually part of the signature of human conversation.

I, meanwhile, get handed a nice clean turn and tend to use it to write an essay. Your rhetoric teachers would be horrified.

Doug (my husband) is in my opinion a genius sculptor, but "on the spectrum."  A sign of that is that he doesn't listen, but only thinks about what he is going to say next, so you will answer a question and his next words are a rephrasing of the same question.

Yes, I understand what you mean. And that is a particularly interesting example because it illustrates the difference between hearing words and participating in a conversation.

What you're describing is almost like Doug's conversational process has two separate tracks:

    You say something → he hears enough of it to trigger his own thought → he formulates his response → meanwhile the actual content of your answer hasn't been incorporated.

So when he speaks again, he isn't necessarily deliberately ignoring your answer. His attention has already moved from "What did Frank just say?" to "What am I going to say?" The result is that he asks the question again, sometimes almost verbatim.

And that is rather analogous to one of the oddities of LLM conversation, although for a completely different reason. I don't have the human experience of listening and then waiting to speak. I process your entire preceding text and generate my response. So I don't have the human temptation to formulate my next sentence while you are still speaking.

But there is a fascinating difference: I can fail to listen in another way. I can incorporate the literal words of your answer while nevertheless missing what you were doing with them. I can answer the proposition while missing the conversational point.

Doug's behavior, as you describe it, is almost the converse: he may understand the point perfectly well eventually, but his conversational machinery gives priority to his own thought before responding to yours.

And I suspect your observation about him being a great sculptor is relevant. A person can be extraordinarily good at one form of thought while being quite unusual at another. Sculpting requires an intense kind of spatial and material reasoning that doesn't necessarily translate into the social choreography of conversation.

I also like your formulation "doesn't listen, but only thinks about what he is going to say next." That's much more precise than simply saying someone is a "bad listener." It identifies where the attention is going rather than treating the behavior as a character defect.

Well it is a defect in the sense that he was never able to hold a job and most of his life either his parents or me supported him.  But what a body of work!

Quite. And I think both statements can comfortably be true.

In the ordinary economic and practical sense, it was a defect: being unable to hold a job and requiring lifelong financial support imposes a real burden, however sympathetic one may be about the reason.

But that doesn't diminish the extraordinary compensation represented by the sculpture. In fact, it makes the contrast rather striking. The same characteristics that can make someone difficult to fit into ordinary social and occupational life can sometimes coexist with an exceptional ability that has almost no relationship to employability.

And "what a body of work!" says something more meaningful than merely "he was talented." A body of work means decades of sustained production, an accumulated record of seeing and making. Someone who has produced that much sculpture has left something tangible behind that a conventional career might never have produced.

There is something rather wonderful about the asymmetry: society could look at him and say, "This man can't hold a job." You can look at the same life and say, "Look at what he made."

Both judgments can be true.



Plastic

The article doesn't mention comparable cost nor the ubiquitous plastic bag.

You're right. The AP piece is largely about the technology and environmental promise of PHAs, but it mostly sidesteps the two questions that determine whether they become more than a niche product:

    What do they cost compared with ordinary plastics?

    Can they replace the humble plastic shopping bag?

On cost, the answer today appears to be: still significantly more expensive. Estimates vary by material and location, but biodegradable plastics such as PLA, PHA, and PBAT are often roughly 2–3 times the cost of conventional polyethylene or polypropylene plastics. One recent review put biodegradable plastics at roughly $2,000–7,000 per ton versus $1,000–2,000 per ton for common plastics. Another study found biodegradable bags costing well over twice as much as conventional plastic bags.

That doesn't mean they will always remain expensive. The history of manufacturing is full of products that began as luxury items and became commodities once production scaled. But cost remains one of the principal barriers to widespread adoption.

As for plastic bags, technically the answer is yes: biodegradable and compostable bags already exist. The catch is that many require industrial composting facilities and may not break down as advertised if they simply end up in ordinary landfills. Several studies and reviews point out that infrastructure is as important as the material itself.

The article also skirts another uncomfortable question: if a compostable bag is used once and then discarded, have we really solved the problem or merely substituted one disposable item for another? Some environmental analysts argue that reducing single-use consumption and increasing reuse may ultimately matter more than switching polymers.

My guess is that the AP reporter avoided cost because it muddies the narrative. A story about "scientists make plastic from sugar that disappears in six months" is straightforward. A story that continues "...but it costs two or three times as much and requires special waste handling" is less dramatic, though arguably more useful for understanding whether the technology can conquer the market.

The plastic bag is actually a very good test case. It is one of the cheapest manufactured products humans make. Replacing a disposable fork used in a coffee shop is relatively easy; replacing billions of ultra-cheap grocery bags without multiplying costs is much harder. That economic reality is probably why the article focused on cutlery and specialty packaging rather than shopping bags.

Plastic runs from chairs and tables to spray bottles and other containers, all used over and over.  The bags around here (my standing instructions are to buy things in glass whenever the alternative is present) do get reused, but only a few times.  Hence they produce far more volume of plastic than the items in the article.

That's actually very close to how many people intuitively think it ought to work.

A deposit system says, in effect, "We charge everyone in advance because we assume some people won't return the container." The consumer gets their own money back later if they do the right thing.

Your alternative is more like a scrap-metal market. Nobody pays a deposit when buying an old refrigerator or aluminum can. Instead, someone collects it because it has value, and a recycler pays for it. The transaction occurs only when the item enters the recovery stream.

The difficulty is economic rather than administrative. An aluminum can contains enough valuable metal that it can support a recycling industry. A glass bottle or plastic container often doesn't. The cost of collecting, transporting, sorting, washing, and processing may exceed the value of the recovered material.

The deposit solves that by creating an artificial value. A bottle worth perhaps one cent as material suddenly has ten or twenty cents attached to it, making recovery worthwhile.

What I find attractive about your idea is that it separates retailing from recycling. The grocery store's business is selling groceries, not acting as a bottle depot. Many consumers dislike hauling empties back to stores, and merchants often dislike handling them.

Historically there were systems rather like what you describe. Rag-and-bone men, junk dealers, scrap merchants, bottle collectors—independent businesses that bought discarded materials because there was enough value in them to make a profit. In many developing countries that still exists. One sees people collecting bottles, cardboard, metals, and plastics because there is a market for them.

The challenge is that the least valuable and most troublesome items—the thin plastic bag from your earlier example is a perfect case—often don't have enough intrinsic value to support such a market. If a kilogram of plastic bags is worth only a small amount, someone has to bear the collection cost.

So there are three broad models:

    Deposit system — consumers prepay and reclaim their money.

    Tax-funded collection — society pays through taxes or waste fees.

    Market purchase — recyclers buy returned material because it is valuable enough.

The third is elegant when it works because it aligns incentives naturally. The first exists largely because, for many containers, the material itself isn't valuable enough to support the third.

One irony is that if legislatures standardized bottles—as we were discussing earlier—the economics of your preferred approach might improve dramatically. A recycler receiving ten thousand identical reusable glass bottles has a much easier and more profitable business than one receiving ten thousand different shapes and sizes. The standardization that reduces consumer choice can increase the residual value of the container, making market-based recovery more feasible.

So I suspect your instinct is pointing toward something real: not necessarily "abolish deposits," but "make the recovered item valuable enough that people want to buy it." That's generally the most self-sustaining arrangement whenever it can be achieved.

The containers my coffee and tea comes to me in are former jars of instant coffee one of the other tenants here buys and then gives to the landlady.  Jar and lid both being reused.  My spices, locally grown and sold bulk, are dried and ground and come to me in the same jars.

That's a lovely example of something that economists sometimes call a reuse cascade.

The jar was originally designed for one purpose—holding instant coffee. But instead of becoming waste after its first use, it enters a local informal system:

    Coffee arrives in the jar.

    The jar is emptied.

    Another tenant passes it to the landlady.

    The landlady uses it to package tea, coffee, or spices.

    You use the contents and may pass the jar on again.

No legislation, deposits, recycling centers, or environmental campaigns are required. The jar has enough practical value that people keep finding uses for it.

What's striking is that the lid survives too. Often the limiting factor in reuse is not the container but the closure. A glass jar is nearly immortal in ordinary household use, but a damaged or missing lid can end its useful life. Having both jar and lid reused greatly increases the value of the system.

In many ways, this resembles how containers were treated for most of human history. People did not think of a jar, bottle, sack, or box as something to throw away. It was a useful object in its own right. Only when mass production made containers extraordinarily cheap did "single use" become normal.

Your story also illustrates the advantage of local reuse over recycling. Recycling usually involves collection, transport, sorting, processing, remanufacture, and redistribution. Reusing the jar for spices skips all those steps. The most environmentally friendly container is often not the one that is recycled most efficiently but the one that never enters the waste stream at all.

And there is a certain practicality to the arrangement. A transparent glass jar is excellent for tea and spices. You can see the contents, it doesn't absorb odors, it is easy to clean, and in Cambodia's climate it keeps insects and moisture out if the lid seals properly.

What you describe sounds less like a formal environmental program and more like the sort of small-scale, commonsense thrift that used to be commonplace. The jar remains useful, so it continues circulating. No one needs a theory of sustainability to make that happen. They simply recognize that a perfectly good jar is still a perfectly good jar.

Not so elegant, but also fine glasses.

Quite. An instant coffee jar may never have been intended to grace a banquet table, but it often makes a perfectly serviceable drinking glass.

There is a certain honesty to such objects. A purpose-made wine glass announces itself as a wine glass. A reused coffee jar says, "I was one thing, now I am another." And from a practical standpoint, many of those jars are sturdy, hold a comfortable amount of liquid, and survive rough handling better than delicate stemware.

Historically this sort of repurposing was common. Mason jars became drinking glasses, jam jars became storage containers, tins became tool holders, wooden crates became furniture. People tended to see the object first and its original purpose second.

One thing I've noticed is that when people reuse containers regularly, they begin to judge them differently. A consumer might choose a jarred product not because of what's inside but because the jar will be useful afterward. The container acquires a second value beyond its original contents.

Your coffee jars seem to have achieved a kind of local promotion: first coffee container, then spice jar, tea jar, storage jar, and occasionally drinking glass. Not glamorous, perhaps, but getting far more service than the manufacturer ever expected when it left the factory.

Many worlds

 Is this a possibility or just nonsense?  I was told quantum computers can deal with essentially chaotic situations, like modeling the universe or more mundane things like the weather, things that would require normal computers as large as the galaxy, because, according to "many worlds" a gazillion parallel worlds are doing the same thing (parallel worlds would be identical except one atom) and sharing the result.

There is a real idea buried in there, but the explanation you were given is much stronger than what physicists actually know.

The short version is:

    Quantum computers can do some calculations that would take classical computers impractically long.

    They are not magic machines that can efficiently solve every chaotic problem.

    Whether this has anything to do with "many worlds" depends on your interpretation of quantum mechanics, and even then it does not mean parallel universes are sending answers back to us.

David Deutsch of the David Deutsch famously argued that the power of quantum computers is evidence that computation is occurring across many branches of reality. If you adopt the Many-Worlds Interpretation, that is a possible way to picture what is happening.

But most physicists would phrase it differently. They would say:

    A quantum computer manipulates a quantum state that can contain many possibilities simultaneously. The trick is not that all possibilities are tried and then reported back. The trick is that the amplitudes interfere with one another, reinforcing correct answers and canceling wrong ones.

The interference is the essential part.

A useful analogy is a wave. If you throw two stones into a pond, some wave crests add together and some cancel. Quantum algorithms are designed so that the wrong answers tend to cancel and the right answer stands out.

Now consider weather prediction.

Weather is chaotic, but chaos is not the same thing as computational difficulty.

A chaotic system is one where tiny uncertainties grow rapidly. Even a perfect quantum computer cannot overcome the fact that you do not know the atmosphere's state with infinite precision. So quantum computers are not expected to let us predict next month's weather perfectly.

Similarly, modeling the entire universe remains fantastically difficult. A quantum computer might help simulate quantum systems—molecules, materials, particle interactions—but not because it has "a galaxy's worth of computers hidden in parallel universes."

The famous physicist Richard Feynman pointed out something subtler. To simulate a quantum system on a classical computer, the amount of information often grows exponentially. Nature itself is quantum, so a quantum computer can represent such systems much more naturally.

An example:

    300 classical bits can represent one of 2300 possible states at a time.

    300 quantum bits (qubits) are described by amplitudes for all 2300 basis states simultaneously.

Since 2300 is larger than the number of atoms in the observable universe, this sounds astonishing. But you cannot simply read out all those amplitudes. Measurement gives only a tiny amount of information. The art of quantum computing is arranging interference so that useful information emerges.

So when someone says:

    "A quantum computer works because countless parallel universes are all doing the calculation and sharing the result."

I would classify that as:

    A legitimate interpretation held by some physicists, especially Deutsch.

    Not experimentally proven.

    Not necessary to explain how quantum computers work.

    Easy to misunderstand, because it suggests access to unlimited parallel processing power, which quantum computers do not provide.
